Meet speech-language pathologist and Continued member Melissa Mercer

Our story is as much about our members as it is about us.

Melissa Mercer, MS, CCC-SLP, enjoys working with patients across the lifespan. She joins the Continued community from New Hampshire, where she works in an acute care hospital and a pediatric rehabilitation center. She also serves as president of the New Hampshire Speech Language Hearing Association.

"Language is the manner in which people access their lives and experience their world. I love being a part of that."

continued member Melissa MercerWhy are you passionate about your field?

Our scope is wide, and the flexibility of practice enables me to support a variety of people as they achieve their communication and nutritional goals.

What do you like most about what you do?

Language is the manner in which people access their lives and experience their world. I love being a part of that.

What value does online learning hold for you?

It means a lot to me to be able to access CEUs on the go. I am a mother and wife, and I work full-time as the only income for my family while my husband completes his MBA and cares for our daughter. On top of that, I volunteer as the president of the New Hampshire Speech Language Hearing Association. I value the efficiency of logging in when I have the time and pausing if I need to complete another task. I am a self-directed learner and appreciate that this mode of continuing education caters to my learning style.

What impact has Continued had on your ability to advance your training or apply new skills to your area of practice?

The biggest benefit I have gained is time. Because I am able to schedule online learning breaks at work, during lunch or at workshop times, I am able to select relevant courses for my current caseload and share this information with staff or patients almost immediately. Additionally, I am also able to watch while walking on my treadmill and feel super motivated by completing two tasks at once!

Thank you, Melissa Mercer, for being a part of our Continued story.
