“Everyone deserves the opportunity and resources to live a life of well-being.”
At the intersection of health and society, medical sociologist Sophie Nathenson, PhD, brings a systems-level lens to understanding how culture, inequality, and community shape our well-being.
As a professor, mentor, and consultant, she helps individuals and organizations explore the social factors that influence health and how we can better support those working on the front lines. With academic roots in psychology and sociology, Dr. Nathenson’s work bridges clinical and non-clinical perspectives to highlight the human experience behind health outcomes.
She focuses on one central principle: Everyone deserves the opportunity and resources to live a life of well-being.
Her courses on Continued Psychology, Social Work, and Counseling delve into topics including social determinants of health, community-based care, and the effects of discrimination and inequality on individual and population health.
“Something that sets Continued apart is the wide variety of content available,” Nathenson said.“There is so much that health professionals have to learn in their educational training that there's often not room in the curriculum to really go in depth into topics like social determinants of health. It becomes really important for continuing education opportunities to be available online on these different topics. It can not only give someone more perspectives to bring to the table to potentially do their work better, but it can also be very professionally fulfilling to really connect with that big picture and see things from a broader viewpoint.”
