How do I complete a course?

After registering for a course, members must view 100% of the course content to earn credit. After participating in a live, video, audio, or text-based course, you will be required to obtain a passing score of 80% on a multiple-choice examination. You will be given immediate feedback regarding the results of your exam and the opportunity to repeat the exam once if necessary. To earn credit for a live webinar, you must be logged into the entire event and complete the exam within 7 days; for a video, audio, or text-based course, you must view 100% of course content and complete the exam within 30 days of the course registration date. If you do not complete the exam within that time, you must re-register for the course. You can access your CE tests by clicking on ‘Dashboard’ or 'Pending Courses' on the navigation sidebar. After passing the exam, you will be required to complete a course evaluation in order to receive a certificate of completion for the course.  Please note that you will not be allowed to complete more than 24 hours of coursework on any calendar day.

Who keeps track of how many CEUs have been earned?

Continued maintains a record of your completed coursework. After you login, navigate to your Dashboard, and select "Transcripts." In the upper right corner of the page, you will see an option to print or to save your certificates or transcripts. To view courses completed prior to the current year you will need to change the Start Date and End Date from the drop-down menu located at the top left corner of the Transcript page and select "Search."  You may access this page at any time to view courses that you have completed.

To comply with requirements for AARC's Continuing Respiratory Care Education program, Continued Respiratory Therapy reports completed coursework to AARC, including the member name, email address, and AARC number.

Course Approvals

Continued Respiratory Therapy courses may be offered for credits from any of several approving organizations, including the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), to meet the continuing education needs of respiratory therapists licensed in all U.S. states and jurisdictions. Not all courses will be offered for the same credits, and it is incumbent on the licensee to understand the continuing education regulations for their license.

However, to facilitate your course search, the State drop-down menu sorts the course library by courses most likely to meet continuing education needs for respiratory therapists licensed in the selected state. Information on our State Pages can provide a brief summary of the requirements for each state and additional guidance on how to use the Continued Respiratory Therapy library to meet your continuing education needs.

How do I use Continued Respiratory Therapy courses to renew my specialty credential?

Respiratory therapists with specialty credentials need CEUs in certain content areas to meet National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) requirements. The NBRC lists requirements for specialty credentials under Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) FAQs on its Resources webpage.

You can search the Continued Respiratory Therapy library by topic to find courses to meet content needs for your credential.

Some courses cover multiple content areas. If a course appears in your NBRC practitioner portal under the wrong course type, simply edit and update the course type. For example, if you completed a course in pediatric pulmonary function, which meets either the pulmonary function technology or neonatal/pediatric course type, it is acceptable to edit the course type to the type that is relevant for your specialty.

What is the difference between CEUs and contact hours?

Course duration or credit is measured differently by different entities. The “CEU” is the internationally recognized standard for continuing education and training, developed and overseen by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). One (1.0) CEU is defined as 10 hours of participation in coursework. Therefore, a single hour of participation in a course is equal to 0.1 CEUs. Continued is accredited by IACET and is authorized to issue the IACET CEU. “Contact hour” is the term used by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) to calculate credit for Continuing Respiratory Care Education CRCE). One (1.0) contact hour of credit is defined by AARC as 60 minutes of instruction.

Please allow 15 days following the course completion date before contacting Continued Respiratory Therapy regarding course reporting.
