Is there a correlation between substance use and family dysfunction?

When looking at families that are dysfunctional, substance use may actually be the cause of the dysfunction, or sometimes it is the result. We do not always know which one came first, the substance use or the dysfunction, but when we have substance use in a family, it definitely is correlated in some way to some level of dysfunction.
Dr. John Smith is the Director of Education and Training at Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS). He is a Professor of Addiction Counseling at Mt. San Antonio College since 2000 and he has also been in Private Practice in California since 2000. Dr. Smith has over 40 years of experience working with mental health and addictions, and he is the author of “Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders: A Practitioner’s Guide” and he is the “Best-Selling” author of “The Authentic Man: A Guide to Happiness and Purpose”.

'This instructor is so knowledgeable and this is not the first course I have taken with him through Continued - my feedback though is that he covers so much material and a lot of it is verbally through his lecture, it is hard to keep up in taking notes!
