Polyvagal theory provides a scientific perspective to studying feelings and utilizes biological factors to explain why we may feel the way we do. The leading figure behind Polyvagal theory is Steven Porges. Porges has coined important terms, such as “autonomic hierarchy, neuroception, and co-regulation or co-regulating systems,” that help practitioners understand the biological functions of the nervous system and their relevance to mental health work. Primarily, Polyvagal Theory emphasizes the importance of understanding that feelings of safety are rooted in internal physiological states regulated by the autonomic nervous system, which is beyond our conscious control and plays a significant role in mental health and conceptualizing feelings and behaviors.
