How is ARDS classified according to the Berlin Definition?
Answer
The Berlin Definition classifies ARDS into three categories based on the severity of hypoxemia, determined by the PF ratio (the ratio of the partial pressure of arterial oxygen to the fraction of inspired oxygen). Mild ARDS has a PF ratio greater than 200 but less than or equal to 300. Moderate ARDS is defined by a PF ratio of less than or equal to 200 but greater than or equal to 100. Severe ARDS is indicated by a PF ratio of less than or equal to 100. These classifications help in early identification and the implementation of appropriate treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes.
