How many CE Hours does New Mexico require for psychologists?

• Psychologist/Psychologist Associate: 40 hours every 2 years.

• Conditional Prescribing/Unrestricted Prescribing Psychologist: 60 hours every 2 years.

Licenses expire on 7/1 every 2 years.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Psychology?

Yes. Continued is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners accepts courses offered by APA approved providers for psychologist license renewal.

Psychologists/Psychologist Associates:

• The New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners requires licensees to obtain a minimum of 15 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) from Category I courses, which are defined as courses offered in a group setting. Continued offers live webinars that may meet this requirement. Refer to Board rules or contact your Board with questions about Category I and II courses.
• The New Mexico Board of Psychologists considers online home study programs as Category II activities. On Continued this includes video, audio, and text courses. Refer to Board rules or contact your Board with questions about Category I and II courses.
• 1 CPE hour is equivalent to 1 APA continuing education (CE) hour.
• Licensees are required to obtain a minimum of 2 CPE hours in cultural diversity or health disparities. Continued offers courses that may meet this requirement.
• Licensees are required to obtain a minimum of 4 CPE hours in equity and inclusion and must be on the topic of race, ethnicity, systemic racism, structural inequality, poverty, or the intersection of variables that impact marginalized communities. Continued offers courses that may meet this requirement.
• Licensees are required to obtain a minimum of 4 CPE hours in ethics. Continued offers courses that may meet this requirement.
• Newly licensed psychologists/psychological associates (restricted/unrestricted) shall complete 8 hours of cultural awareness coursework approved by the board prior to their first renewal. These courses should be designed to provide knowledge and awareness of the cultures of New Mexico; the title and descriptions must make clear a breadth of cultural awareness and specific content of NM cultures. Continued does not currently offer this content.

Conditional Prescribing or Unrestricted Prescribing Psychologist:

• In addition to the requirements listed above for psychologists and psychologist associates, licensees must obtain 40 out of the 60-hour CPE requirement in the area of psychopharmacology or psychopharmacotherapy.
