Working the muscle bellies in Achilles tendinopathy
Question
When treating Achilles tendinopathy, why is it important to consider working the muscle bellies instead of directly on the tendon?
Answer
The Achilles tendon can be highly sensitive and irritated in cases of tendinopathy. Direct work may further aggravate symptoms. However, trigger points and tightness in the gastroc/soleus muscle bellies can refer pain and irritation into the Achilles area. Releasing these muscle tensions can help alleviate strain on the tendon without directly compressing it. This gives an alternative treatment approach while still addressing core issues. It also works for superstitious athletes hesitant about direct tendon work. The goal remains calming irritation rather than where exactly force is applied.
