Question

What role can massage therapy play in supporting individuals with depressive disorders?

Answer

Depressive disorders affect millions of people worldwide, often leading to symptoms such as persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and even physical pain. Research suggests that depression is linked to disruptions in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, as well as dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which governs stress response.

Massage therapy can provide meaningful relief by fostering relaxation, improving sleep quality, and promoting a sense of well-being. The soothing effects of touch therapy can support clients in feeling more connected to their bodies, reducing feelings of isolation and physical discomfort. While massage therapy should not replace traditional medical treatments such as psychotherapy or medication, it can serve as a valuable complementary approach. Practitioners must also be aware that individuals with depression may struggle with motivation, including attending sessions regularly, and may require additional encouragement and flexibility.
