Important considerations for treating knee injuries with cupping therapy
Question
What are some important considerations for treating knee injuries with cupping therapy?
Answer
When treating knee injuries, it is important to consider the stage of healing. In acute injuries, focus on decreasing pain, swelling and inflammation using light suction, slow cup movements, and lymphatic drainage techniques above the knee. Avoid directly cupping over inflamed tissues. In subacute stages, begin cupping tissue around the injury to address muscular guarding and range of motion, while monitoring swelling and bruising risk. In chronic injuries after the tissue has healed, stronger cupping forces can be applied to scar tissue and adhesions to help remodel it. Always maximize the client’s pain-free range of motion and provide home exercises like gentle nerve glides with cups to facilitate continued healing.
