Anatomical factors and adhesive capsulitis development
Question
What anatomical factors contribute to adhesive capsulitis development, and how can massage therapy help?
Answer
Adhesive capsulitis involves thickening and contracting of the shoulder joint capsule with bands of scar tissue reducing space for the humeral head. This progression limits the range of motion over time. Structures impacted include the capsule itself, the rotator cuff providing stability, and multiple shoulder muscles involved in maneuvering the joint through different actions.
Massage approaches focus on maintaining and restoring mobility within the patient’s current ROM limits using techniques like pin and stretch or joint mobilizations. Addressing related trigger points provides pain relief. It works to balance shoulder musculature, engage stable scapular positioning, and gently coax tissues through ranges of motion without pushing too aggressively. This helps manage inflammation and prevent the shoulder from “freezing.” Progress will be slow, but consistent work can make significant long-term improvements.
