How many CE Credits does Vermont require for counselors?

• Professionals licensed by the Vermont Board of Allied Mental Health:

  • LMHC: 40 hours every 2 years. License expires on 1/31 of odd-numbered years.
  • LMFT: 20 hours every 2 years. License expires on 11/30 of even-numbered years.

• Professionals with credentials from the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, Alcohol & Drug Abuse Counselor Advisors:

  • LADC, ADC, APP: 40 hours every 2 years. Licenses expire on 1/31 of odd-numbered years.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Counseling?

• Licensed Professional Counselors and Marriage & Family Therapists: Yes. For professionals licensed through the Vermont board of Allied Mental Health, the board accepts courses by NBCC approved providers. Continued has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7484. Find courses offered for NBCC credit.

• Addiction Counselors: Yes. The Vermont Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors Board accepts courses by NAADAC approved providers. Continued is a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, #283836. Find courses approved by NAADAC.

Licensees are responsible for completing courses that align with the content requirements for their specific license.

Licensed Professional Counselors:

• LMHC:

  • A maximum of 28 hours may be obtained through distance learning courses. On Continued this includes audio, video, and text courses. The remaining 18 hours may be obtained through live, interactive courses. Continued offers live courses.
  • 4 hours in ethics must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement. The remaining 36 hours must be in theory and practice of clinical mental health.
  • Supervisors are encouraged to obtain CE hours in supervision topics. Continued offers courses on supervision.
  • 1 hour in anti-oppressive practice or related areas must be completed each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the anti-oppressive practice course requirement.

Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors:

• LMFT:

  • A maximum of 10 hours may be obtained through distance learning courses. On Continued this includes audio, video, and text courses. The remaining 10 hours may be obtained through live, interactive courses. Continued offers live courses.
  • 4 hours in ethics must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement.

  • There is no limit to the number of continuing education hours that can be completed online.
  • 6 hours of ethics each renewal period. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement.
