How many CE Credits does Utah require for counselors?

Professionals licensed by the Utah Mental Health Counseling Board:
- CMHC, MFT: 40 hours every 2 years. Licenses expire on 9/30 of even-numbered years.
Professionals licensed by the Utah Substance Use Disorder Counseling Board:
- SUDC, ASUDC: 40 hours every 2 years. Licenses expire on 5/31 of odd-numbered years.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Counseling?

Clinical Mental Health Counselors/Marriage & Family Therapists/Addiction Counselors: Yes. The Utah Division of Professional Licensing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and in Substance Use Disorder Counseling accepts courses approved by a professional association in mental health therapy. Continued has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7484. Continued is a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, #283836. Find courses offered for NBCC credit or courses approved by NAADAC.

Licensees are responsible for completing courses that align with the content requirements for their specific license.

Other Information

Licensed Professional Counselors:

CMHC:
- A maximum of 10 hours may be obtained through distance learning courses. On Continued this includes audio, video, and text courses. The remaining 30 hours may be obtained through live, interactive courses. Continued offers live courses.
- 6 hours in ethics and laws must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement.
- 2 hours in suicide prevention must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the suicide prevention course requirement.

Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors:

MFT:
- A maximum of 15 hours may be obtained through distance learning courses. On Continued this includes audio, video, and text courses. The remaining 25 hours may be obtained through live, interactive courses. Continued offers live courses.
- 6 hours in ethics and laws must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement.
- 2 hours in suicide prevention must be obtained each renewal. Continued offers courses that may meet the suicide prevention course requirement.
- A minimum of 15 hours must be directly related to marriage and family therapy. Licensees are responsible for choosing courses relevant to their scope of practice.

Addiction Counselors:

SUDC, ASUDC:
- Licensees should select continuing education courses relevant to their practice scope.
- There is no limit to the number of continuing education hours that can be completed online; however, at least 25 of the 40 required hours must be through live interactive webinars. Continued offers live courses.
- 6 hours of ethics each renewal period. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics requirement.
- 2 hours of suicide prevention each renewal period. Continued offers courses that may meet the suicide prevention requirement.
