How many CE Credits does Rhode Island require for counselors?

  • Professionals licensed by the Rhode Island Board of Mental Health Counselors and Marriage/Family Therapists

    • MHC, MFT: 40 hours every 2 years. Licenses expire on 6/30 of even-numbered years.
    • MHCA, MFTA: Continuing education is not required.
  • Professionals with credentials from the Rhode Island Certification Board:

    • CADC, CAADC, CCS: 40 hours every 2 years.

    • CCS licensees must obtain an additional 6 hours on topics specific to supervision.

Those with other credentials should refer to the board rules for requirements.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Counseling?

  • Licensed Mental Health Counselors: Marriage & Family Therapists: Yes. For professionals licensed through the Rhode Island Board of Marriage, Family and Mental Health Therapy, and Professional Counselors, the board accepts courses by NBCC approved providers. Continued has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7484. Find courses offered for NBCC credit.

  • Addiction Counselors: Yes. Courses on Continued may be used for continuing education requirements for those with credentials from the Rhode Island Certification Board. Continued is a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, #283836. Find courses approved by NAADAC.

Licensees are responsible for completing courses that align with the content requirements for their specific license.

Other Information

Licensed Mental Health Counselors and Licensed Marriage and Family Counselors:

  • There is no limit to the amount of continuing education hours that can be obtained online.
