How many CE Credits does New York require for counselors?

• Professionals licensed by the New York State Department of Education:

  • LMHC, LMFT, Creative Arts Therapist, Psychoanalyst: 36 hours every 3 years. Licenses expire triennially.

• Professionals Certified by the New York Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS):

  • CASAC, CPP, CPS: 60 hours every 3 years.
  • CASAC-G, CPGC, CPS-G, CPP-G: 70 hours (60 hours plus an additional 10 hours of gambling-related education) every 3 years. Credentials expire triennially.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Counseling?

LMHC & LMFT:

• A maximum of 12 hours may be obtained through home-study courses. Continued offers home-study audio, video, and text courses. Use the format filter to select desired course formats.
• There is no limit to the amount of live, interactive courses. Continued offers live courses.
• 3 hours in maintaining professional boundaries must be obtained each renewal. Continued offer courses that may meet the professional boundaries course requirement.

Licensed Psychoanalysts & Licensed Creative Arts Therapists:

• A maximum of 12 hours may be obtained through home-study courses. Continued offers home-study audio, video, and text courses. Use the format filter to select desired course formats.

Addiction Counselors:

• CASAC, CPP, CPS:

  • All hours of continuing education should directly relate to the licensee's scope of practice.

  • 6 hours of ethics each renewal period. Continued offers courses that may meet the ethics course requirement.
  • There are several other one-time course requirements that are offered free by the board.

• CASAC-G, CPGC, CPS-G, CPP-G:

  • All hours of continuing education should directly relate to the licensee's scope of practice.
    There is no limit to the number of continuing education hours that can be completed online.
