How many CE Credits does Michigan require for counselors?

  • Professionals licensed by the Michigan Board of Counseling:

    • Licensed Professional Counselor: Continuing education is not required. License expires every 3 years on 6/30.
    • Licensed Limited Professional Counselor: Continuing education is not required. License expires annually on 6/30.
  • Professionals licensed by the Michigan Board of Marriage & Family Therapy:

    • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist: Continuing education is not required. License expires every 2 years.
  • Professionals Certified by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals:

    • CAADC, CADC, CPS, CPC, CPRM, CCJP: 40 hours every 2 years OR 60 hours every 3 years.
    • CCS, CCS-M: Must meet the requirements for CADC or CAADC license and must include 3 hours in supervision.

Can I take my continuing education through Continued Counseling?

  • Addiction Counselors: Yes. The Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) accepts courses by NAADAC-approved providers. Continued is a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, #283836. Find courses approved by NAADAC. The board also approves individual courses submitted directly to the board. Find courses approved by MCBAP.

Licensees are responsible for completing courses that align with the content requirements for their specific license.

Other Information

LLPC, LLPC, LMFT:

Addiction Counselors:

  • CAADC, CADC, CPS, CPC, CPRM, CCJP:

    • A course may not be taken more than once within a twelve (12)-month period.
    • Education must be related to the performance domains of the credential that they are renewing.
    • Specific Education: The majority of course content must focus on alcohol, tobacco, and/or other drug use and prevention issues. Keywords in course titles are substance abuse, substance use disorder, drug addiction, chemical dependency, alcohol, tobacco, drug use, or co-occurring disorders.
    • Related Education: General courses in clinical theory and therapeutic methods or courses that only touch briefly on substance use disorder, will count as related.
  • CCS-M and CCS:

CE Broker Reporting:

  • Proof of required CE must be electronically submitted directly to CE Broker. Continued will report course completions to CE Broker for approved courses. You may also self-report to CE Broker. The Continued provider number for CE Broker is 50-29950.
